My 20D and a day in Vancouvers East End : The Downtown Eastside is the oldest neighbourhood in Vancouver. The neighbourhood has a rich and colourful history and a strong community fabric. It is bordered by Cambie Street to the west, Clark Drive to the east, the waterfront to the north and Pender Street to the south, with Hastings Street running down the middle of the neighbourhood. Once a popular destination for shopping, restaurants, and nightlife, the area of Main and Hastings is now known as the poorest postal code in Canada. Retail shops which flourished through the early 1980's are now gone. Buildings that are not boarded up have bars on the windows. Overhead doors cover storefronts at night to protect them from theft and vandalism. Graffiti is prevalent throughout. The area is noted for high incidences of poverty, drug addiction, and prostitution. Drug use is completely out in the open and out of control. The skid row corner of Hastings and Main has been described as "the most active corner as a drug market in North America".

Misc. Vancouver Shots : Just some miscellaneous shots from wandering around in Vancouver.

House Fire in Nanaimo 2006 : On June 19th, 2006, an old heritage house in the downtown area caught on fire. The owner fought the blaze with a garden hose until the fire department arrived. By the next day the house was just a shell. Neighbours said they thought the house was close to 100 years old.

Images of Chinatown : This is North America's second biggest Chinatown, after San Francisco's. Mandarin and Cantonese are the mother tongues in 30 per cent of Vancouver homes, which makes Chinese the largest "minority" ethnic group. There are lots of interesting markets with many varieties of fresh and dried seafood and mushrooms. You'll also find inexpensive houseware and traditional Chinese medicine.

During the summer, on weekend evenings, Keefer and Pender Streets become a busy open-air night market. If you have time for a leisurely meal, try dim sum at one of the many small restaurants. It is an inexpensive, multi-course culinary adventure. Relax in the peaceful Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, or marvel at the ornate Millennium Gate - just steps away on Pender Street. Visit the Chinese Cultural Centre Museum, or participate in one of its many activities.

2009 Photo Scavenger Hunt : The Harbour City Photography Club held a Photo Scavenger Hunt on a nice Tuesday evening, on May 12th, 2009 in downtown Nanaimo. Wemet at the Diana Krall Plaza and were assigned a photo partner, given a list of our 15 items to photograph, and then turned loose on the downtown! it was a fun evening and I managed to get all 15 items, but not without a lot of help from the other photographers.

After the hunt we went to the Red Martini Grill and turned our unedited (GULLPPPPPP) images over to David. As a digital baby this is way outside my comfort zone!

Here are the images I submitted for the Scavenger Hunt, but edited. The way they SHOULD be!!
