Miss Nanaimo Ambassador Gala 2008

Miss Nanaimo Ambassador Gala 2007 : On Saturday, September 22nd, 2007, the 62nd "Miss" Nanaimo Ambassador Gala was held at the Port Theater.

The Pageant featured contestants competing in speech, talent, impromptu questions, and sponsor introductions and ended with the crowning of three new Ambassadors (Queen and two Princesses) at the end of the evening.

The Nanaimo Ambassador Program is a not-for-profit organization whose mandate is to hold an annual program of self-development for young women between the ages of 16 and 19. The cornerstones of the program are education, community involvement and personal growth. Contestants participate in etiquette training, speech training with Toastmaster, self-defense, car maintenance, community volunteering, the program culminates in a competition for the selection of three Ambassadors to represent the City of Nanaimo for a one year.

The Ambassador Team travels to various communities throughout British Columbia representing Nanaimo's Youth and supports our community by volunteering and attending various events throughout the year such as the Run for the Cure, Rely for Life, Dragonboat Races, Silly Boat Races, Christmas Parade, Empire Day Society Parade, Bathtub Parade, Vancouver Island Exhibition. Scholarships are awarded to the Ambassador winners and bursaries are awarded to the winner(s) of the competitions for speech, talent, personal growth and community involvement; to be used towards their post-secondary education.

2008 Nanaimo Empire Days Parade : This is the second year I have attended and photographed this great Nanaimo parade. Its a great way to spend an afternoon of photography. This year I shot the entire parade with my Sigma 50-500 and tried to concentrate more on the people enjoying and participating in the parade rather than the floats. Thankfully it was also much nicer weather than last year! The Empire Days Parade was started by English coal miners in 1863 and has run continuously since then and is a great local tradition.

2007 Nanaimo Empire Days Parade : The 2007 Nanaimo Empire Days Parade

Nanaimo boasts the oldest annual continuous celebrations of Victoria Day without a break in the entire Commonwealth! In the early days of Nanaimo, people took a half day off for May Day and a full day off for Queen Victoria's birthday on 24 May, 1819. The May Day celebrations were later amalgamated into the Victoria Day or Empire Day celebrations. This was a patriotic holiday, as Canada Day is now. The earliest known record of our Nanaimo Victoria Day celebrations was in the British Colonist (now known as the Victoria Times-Colonist) newspaper of 30 May, 1863.

2006 VIEX or Vancouver Island Exhibition : The Nanaimo VIEX, started over 100 years ago. It has grown from an agricultural exhibition to become a true Nanaimo "Family Event"! We had a great Exhibition this year. Attendance was way up from last year and there were several new events like the Bull-Riding.

2008 Coombs Rodeo : As long as I can remember, the Coombs rodeo has been one of the true summer events here on Vancouver Island. It is held in late July and nowadays attracts locals and summer visitors alike. It really takes you back to a time when things were simpler here. A time when there really were cowboys and the people had a stronger bond to the earth through farming. I try to attend every year. This year I decided to present my images of the rodeo in b&w and tried to capture some of the rodeo's spirit in a few select shots. I hope they say something to you.

2009 Chinese New Years Parade in Vancouver : 2009 is the year of the Ox! This year, the Chinese New Years Parade in Vancouver was held on Sunday, February 1st. The Parade started at the Millennium Gates on Pender Street and wound its way through Chinatown. There were over 2500 participants in the parade and the streets were jammed with people out to see this colourful event. And this despite it being a miserable, cold, rainy (and sometimes snowy) day! All in all it was a colourful day of street photography with lots of good energy!

2009 Vancouver Pride Parade : ***WARNING*** SOME PEOPLE MAY BE OFFENDED BY SOME OF THE IMAGES IN THIS GALLERY- THERE ARE IMAGES OF NAKED MEN AND WOMEN (YIKES) ***WARNING***

This year I finally got to photograph the 2009 Pride Parade in Vancouver. I had wanted to attend this event for a couple of years as I had heard it was one of the most fun, colourful parades anywhere. And I was not disappointed! It was a great parade with a happy, friendly crowd watching it. It was estimated that 700,000 people lined the route to watch the parade, which lasted well over 2 hours!

You can be sure that I will be back at the 2010 Vancouver Pride Parade to photograph the festivities again!

I hope that I captured some of the wonderful energy and spirit of this event and that you enjoy my images of it.

2009 Snowbirds Airshow in Nanaimo : On August 12th, 2009, Canada's Snowbird Demonstration Team and Hawk One performed an air show for charity in Nanaimo. The show was in the sky's over downtown Nanaimo and Newcastle channel and Swy-A-Lana Lagoon. It drew quite the summer crowd and the waterfront was quite packed. We were lucky enought to be able to photograph the whole show from the 22nd floor of a tower downtown. Here are some of my images from that nice evening. All my images were taken with my Canon 50D and my Sigma 50-500 and handheld too! Hope you enjoy!
